SPORTS BRIEFS: Nepali wins Kailali Open

KATHMANDU : Former national champion Badri Lal Nepali won the title of Kailali Open Chess Tournament on Saturday in Dhangadhi. Nepali played a draw with Candidate Master (CM) Rupesh Jaiswal of GoldenGate College in the last round to remain undefeated in the tournament. Nepali garnered 7.5 points from nine rounds to clinch the title and bag Rs 25,000. CM Prachanda Man Malakar held Madan Krishna Kayastha in the last round to secure the second position with seven points. Kayastha bagged Rs 15,000. Dhan Bahadur Bogati of Kailali also garnered seven points but finished third on the basis of progressive points. He received Rs 10,000. Tirtha Bahadur BK of Banke and Prakash Ojha of Doti topped the tournament in the categories of below-1900 rating points and below-1700 rating points respectively. Rudra Khaniya of Kanchanpur became champion of Far-western Region while Tekraj Upadhyaya of Kailali secured first position in the unrated group. Kritika Ojha became the lady champion while Nar Bahadur Bohara clinched the title in the veterans" section.



Twin wins for Excelsior

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): The Excelsior School defeated Everest School, Bhaktapur in both boys" and girls" sections of the First Inter-school Home and Away Basketball Championship on Saturday. Excelsior thrashed Everest 50-25 in the boys" section on its home court at Swayambhu as Biki Gurung scored 15 points for the winning team. In the girls" section, Excelsior edged past Everest 18-10 as Rinku Kumari Das scored 12 points alone for the home team. Likewise, Skylark defeated Chandbagh 64-30 in the boys" section with 20 points from Avishek Pokharel. However, Skylark lost to Chandbagh 19-25 in the girls" section. Sunita Gurung scored 17 points for Chandbagh.



Analjyoti lifts girls" title

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Analjyoti won the girls" title in the First Laligurans Inter-school Volleyball Tournament on Saturday. Analjyoti defeated Angels" Heart 25-9, 25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 15-5 in the final. Kuleshwar beat the host Laligurans National Academy to secure third place in the girls" section. In the boys" section, Shreekamana beat Paradigm 20-25, 21-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-8 and Deepjyoti edged past Samakhushi English Boarding School 25-22, 25-11, 24-26, 25-23 on Saturday to secure berths in the final scheduled for Sunday.
