SPORTS BRIEFS: Int'l invitation volleyball from Jan 7

POKHARA, Nov 28: Western Regional Volleyball Association (WRVA) is organizing the International Invitational Women´s Volleyball Tournament from January 7 to12, the organizers announced at a press meet. According to the organizer WRVA, the event will feature a total of eight teams, including six domestic and two foreign.



According to Chhyam Bahadur Thapa, the tournament coordinator, the winner will bag a purse of Rs 111,111. The second and third place finishers will receive Rs 50,555 and Rs 20,222 respectively. [break]Similarly, Rs 10,111 will be given as a consolation prize. The best player, spiker, setter, bolcker, defense and quicker will also be awarded. The expected cost of the event is Rs 1.65 million. According to Thapa, the proceeds from the tournament will be used for construction of a covered hall.



Host wins KU Cup Cricket



KATHMANDU
: Host Kathmandu University clinched the title of First KU Cup T20 Cricket Tournament on Wednesday. KU registered a thumping 121 run win over Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUMS). Electing to bat first, KU scored a mammoth total of 213/6. KU´s Pragyesh Dhungel hammered 109 off 57 that included 20 fences. Krishna Bista contributed 28 runs and Ankit Bikram Paudel 26 runs for KU. Dhungel was declared the man-of-the-match.



Chasing the huge target, KUMS was bowled for 121 runs in 17.5 overs. Raj Kumar Yadav was the highest scorer for KUMS with 23 runs to his name while Saroj Ghimire and Prabin Kumar Jha contributed 20 runs apiece. KU´s Krishna Bista and Raunak Jung Pandey claimed four wickets apiece while Sagar Chand took two wickets. Krishna Bista of KU won the man-of-the-series award while Dhungel of same team took home best batsman award. Dhungl had scored a total of 263 runs Bista had claimed 10 wickets and scored 168 runs. Best bowler title went to Aashish Ghimire of Nepal College of Management for claiming nine wickets.



KUHS, Nepal APF into QF



KATHMANDU
: Kathmandu University High School (KUHS) and Nepal APF School advanced into the quarterfinal of the 17th Fr Moran Memorial Inter-school Football Tournament on Wednesday. KUHS and APF finished group C as the winner and runner up. KUHS eased past Vidhya Sagar 5-0 with Hiten Dahal scored all the goals. APF overcame Malpi 2-0. Birendra Budha scored both of the goals for APF. In another match, Dolphin edged past Tiryog 4-1. Sudip Gharti Magar netted twice while Sanam Silwal and Ashis Silwal scored one apiece.



2014 Challenge Cup in Maldives



KATHMANDU
: Maldives has won the hosting rights of the 2014 AFC Challenge Cup. The AFC Competitions Committee on Wednesday took the decision to this effect, according to AFC. The committee, under the chairmanship of AFC Vice-President the UAE´s Yousuf Al Serkal, ratified the decision of the organizing committee for AFC President´s Cup & AFC Challenge Cup to appoint Maldives as the host of the next edition of this eight-team finals.
