SPORTS BRIEFS: Inter-school road race

KATHMANDU, Sept 8: Tirtha Khatri and Sharmila Chhetri won gold medals in boys´ and girls´ category in the Valley-wide Inter-school Road Race Tournament on Thursday.



In the boys´ 5km race, Khatri finished first with 22 minutes 29.36 seconds. [break]



Sunil BK clocked 22 minutes 36.34 seconds to complete the race in second position and Bardaman Tamang finished third with the timing of 22 minutes 46.7 seconds. In the girls´ 3km race, Chhetri took 15 minutes 50.4 seconds to claim the first position. Sangita Khadka and Laxmi Karki finished second and third respectively. The winners of the race received Rs 5,000 while the second and third position holders bagged a purse of Rs 3,000 and 2,000 respectively.



C Div Super League kicks off


KATHMANDU: The Super League of Red Bull C Division District League has kicked off at Dang on Thursday. In the opening match, UNBC of Dang edged past Barda Football Club of Dolakha by 1-0. Bipin Pun scored the only goal for UNBC. The scheduled match between Belgachhi Youth Club and Pragatisil Samajic Club was postponed due to technical reasons.



Jyapu Cup title race wide open


KATHMANDU: The title race in the first Jyapu Cup National Open FIDE Rating Chess Tournament has become wide open as the top three players have 7.5 points each after the completion of the ninth round on Thursday. Nepal champion Badrilal Nepali leads the points table, because of his superior rating, followed by former Nepal champion Surbir Lama and Naveen Tandukar. FIDE Master Manish Hamal ended the undefeated run of Nepali in the eighth round. However, Hamal lost the next game to Naveen Tandukar. Tandukar defeated Krishna Thapa in the eighth round. Surbir Lama registered wins in the eighth and ninth rounds to stay in contention for the title. Nepali defeated unrated Krishna Man Maharjan in the ninth round. Krishna Thapa, Rijendra Rajbhandari and Manish Hamal have equal 6.5 points each and are placed in the fourth, fifth and sixth positions respectively.



Host Bagmati in quarters


KATHMANDU: The boys´ teams of host Bagmati College and defending champion National Campus have confirmed their place in the quarterfinals of the ongoing Second Bagmati Inter-college Basketball Tournament on Thursday. Bagmati edged past Nobel 48-40 as Tejendra Gurung and Rajesh Maharjan scored 15 points each. With 18 points from Prajun Pokhrel, National defeated Kathmandu Valley 66-41. In other matches, NASA thrashed U-2 42-19, Golden Gate registered a narrow margin 68-66 win over Rose Bud, CCRC beat Bernhardt 41-32, White House overcame Pentagon 51-32, Nava Jivan overpowered Lumbini 48-24 and Trinity routed Xavier International 51-30, to qualify for the quarterfinals.


Neric lifts title


KATHMANDU: Neric Academy lifted the trophy of Yuva Cup Basketball Tournament on Thursday as another finalist Galaxy School abruptly abandoned the match. Galaxy abandoned the game while trailing 18-13 in the second quarter citing dissatisfaction over the referee´s decision. Subsequently, Galaxy was dropped to the fourth position. Shubhatara, which won the third-place play-off against Gyan Niketan, was declared the runner-up while Gyan Niketan settled for the third place.
