SPORTS BRIEFS: Ex minister Thapa lifts title

KATHMANDU, Oct 28: Kamal Thapa, former minister and president of Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal, clinched the title in the above 45 years age group in the Veterans´ Tennis Tournament held in New Delhi on Thursday.



Thapa defeated M Suresh of Andhra Pradesh 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets to lift the title. [break]



The total cash prize of the tournament is IRs 500,000. Thapa returned to Kathmandu on Thursday after the victory.



Jaisawal takes lead



National U-15 champion Rupesh Jaisawal took lead in the Dhan Bahadur Pradhan Memorial FIDE Rating Chess Tournament on Thursday after the completion of third round. Jaisawal remains undefeated till the third round with 3 points. Jaisawal defeated Asmeeta Adhikari, his friend from Deepjyoti School, in the second round. He also outclassed Laxman Kumar Regmi in the third round.



Meanwhile, Gyanendra Khaiju, National U-19 champion Nikesh Duwal, Sajin Maharjan, Milan Rokka and Purushottam Chaulagain are in the second position with 2.5 points each. Likewise, Umesh Sainju, Maheshwar Lal Dangol, Krishna Hari Shrestha, Shiromani Bajracharya, Prashan Bhasima, Suman Kumar Shrestha, Sangita Jaisawal and Bivek Lama have two points each in the tournament organized by the Himalayan Chess Club.



Para-athletes seek government support



Nepali para-athletes preparing for the Asian Para Games complained that they were not getting assistance from the government. Nepal Para Olympic Committee has selected eight athletes for 100 m, 200 m and long jump for the tournament, which will be held from December 12 to 19 in Guangzhou, China, shortly after the completion of the 16th Asian Games.



Jeet Bahadur Khadka, who presented himself as the coordinator of the selected players during a press conference on Thursday, demanded at least 20 percent of the sports budget for para-athletes.
