At the TU Cricket Ground, Baluwatar put up 69/7 in the allotted 20 overs. Amrit Bhattarai took three wickets for the departmental team. In reply, Paresh Lohani scored 26 runs and Paras Khadka struck an unbeaten 20 to guide APF to an eight-wicket victory in 12.3 overs.
In Group ´B´, Yangal Club thrashed Kantipur City College (KCC) by 93 runs. Yangal, electing to bat, put up 187/6 in 20 overs. Subash Pradhan scored 79 runs off 41 balls for Yangal, while Rabindra Dhakal and Pankaj Sinha took three wickets each for KCC. In reply, KCC were restricted to 94/7.
Golden Gate clean sweep South Siders Open
Golden Gate clinched both the men´s and women´s titles of the Second South Siders Open Basketball Tournament on Tuesday. Golden Gate defeated Whitehouse 59-40 in the women´s final while their men´s team thrashed the hosts South Siders 95-79 at the National Sports Council Covered Hall to lift the title.
Preeti Tulachan of Golden Gate was adjudged the most valuable player while Sadina Shrestha of Nakhipot Youth club received the award for best defensive player in the women´s category. Likewise, Mrinalini Shrestha of Whitehouse got the best young player award.
In the men´s section, Sanjay Byanjankar of South Siders was adjudged the most valuable player. Likewise, Bikram Joshi of Whitehouse and Siddhartha Maharjan of Unique Group received awards for best defensive player and best young player, respectively.
Maharjan wins gold in TT
Erika Maharjan of Bijeshwari clinched gold on the first day of the Open Table Tennis Tournament organized by Madan Bhandari Sports Academy on Tuesday. Maharjan defeated her teammate Norden Tamang 11-7, 13-11, 11-7 in the final of the girls´ U-14 age group. Sonu Thapa of Nyatapol and Nikita Koju of Annapurna finished joint third.
In the boys´ U-14 matches, Krishna Thapa Magar of Nyatapol, Rajoj Man Thakur of Bidya Bikar, Shreejal Malla of AVM and Pritam Awale of Prabhat School entered the semifinals winning their respective matches. Altogether 211 players are competing in the three-day event in different categories.
Five selected for U-14 Asian tennis
Five Nepali tennis players have been selected for the U-14 Asian Junior Tennis Championship (Group 2) to be held in Myanmar from January 22 to February 2. Ivan Hoe Lissanevitch, Abhaya Gauchan and Abhishek Bastola have been selected in the boys´ category, according to All Nepal Lawn Tennis Association. The players selected in the girls´ category are Bibhuti Karki and Bijisha Shrestha. The players were selected after conducting round robin matches between players who had reached the quarterfinals of different tournaments in 2010.
Selection for Asian Cross Country in Feb
The 11th Asian Cross Country Tournament is scheduled to be held in Nepal on February 20, 2011. Selection for the tournament will be held on February 4 at the Gokarna Forest Resort, according to Nepal Amateur Athletics Association. Two events each in men´s and women´s categories will be included in the selection round. Athletes will compete in 12 km race in senior men´s category and 8 km race in junior men´s category.
The women´s category will include 8 km and 6 km races in the senior and junior categories, respectively. Five players from each event will be selected for the tournament. The athletes will compete in individual and group events.
Chhantyal leads archery
Govinda Chhantyal is leading the First Open Tara Running Shield Archery Tournament after the fifth day. He scored three points on Tuesday to take his tally to nine points and was also declared the best player of the day. Chhantyal has a one-point advantage over both Kamal Gurung and Gate Bahadur Purja who also scored three points each on the day.
