Special Court begins hearings in Manange case

KATHMANDU, Aug 18: The Special Court on Sunday began hearings over whether or not gangster Deepak Manange aka Rajiv Gurung should be sent to judicial custody.



Chairman of the Special Court Kedar Prasad Chalise and members Mohan Raman Bhattarai and Bhupendra Prasad Rai ordered that Manange be kept at the custody of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police as hearings on the case could not be concluded on Sunday. [break]



“The hearing will continue on Monday,” Under-secretary at the Special Court Keshav Prasad Ghimire told Republica.

CIB on Friday night had arrested Manange from City Center shopping mall located at Kamalpokhari, Kathmandu.



The Department of Money Laundering Investigation (DoMLI) on May 19 had filed cases against Manange and four other notorious gangsters at the Special Court on charges of amassing property through illegal means. Manange has been accused of amassing Rs 147.3 million through illegal sources.



Similarly, gangster Ganesh Lama has been accused of illegally amassing Rs 270 million, Parshuram Basnet Rs 116.1 million, Chakre Milan Rs 70.7 million and Abhisek Giri Rs 29.4 million from illegal sources.



Lama, who is also the central committee member of Bijay Kumar Gachchhadar-led Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Democratic (MPRF-D), is serving a jail-term at Dilli Bazaar Jail after he failed to submit a bail amount of Rs 30 million.



Similarly, Basnet, who is a leader of CNP-UML´s youth wing, has been released on bail while Milan is in the central jail for his involvement in drug smuggling and other crimes. Giri, who is close to Nepali Congress, is still absconding.
