KATHMANDU, Dec 6: You see people rallying against sexual harassment or lobbying for world peace. There are causes that you personally feel for and believe in. According to the responses on Republica Gennext’s Facebook page, below are some causes that the youth think as worth fighting for.

Ekta Mishra opines, “I want to fight for a fair government. I want someone who can give citizens like me, the assurance that voting for them was not a regretful decision.” She uses a powerful metaphor to justify herself and says, “As a youth of Nepal, I want our country to be led by a lion who will lead Nepal towards development not a herd of foxes.”[break]

Similarily, corruption is a cause that Prajwal Tamang Ghicingh strongly feels for. “I would fight against corruption,” says Ghicingh. “Because of corruption, prices are rising. There are cases of ministries keeping all the money they collect from citizens in the name of royalties and taxes, in their own pockets, making the poor citizens take the burden of inflation,” he opines.

For Sanjay Chaudhary, the issue of the rights of people is more important. Hence, he says, “I would fight for our rights.” The violation of human rights is a critical issue that people have been fighting for in order to make sure that no person is violated and deprived of the rights that they are entitled to. “I feel pity when people are unaware of their own rights,” he adds.

Anil Karki in particular, wants to fight for the uplifting and empowerment of Nepali women for inclusive peace. “The Census 2011 showed that half the population of Nepal constitutes women. Despite women’s crucial participation in political movements, their role and occupancy in crucial areas of decision making has been neglected by this patriarchal society,” asserts Karki. Seeing the inclusion of women as an important variable for sustainable peace in the country, he says, “Exclusion of women in fields of leadership, politics, law, business and so on, means paralyzing more than half of population. How can we succeed in establishing sustainable peace, this way?”

Karki questions concluding that by fighting for gender equity across all sectors, he will also fight for the greater cause of peace.
