KATHMANDU, April 3: Six Maoist parties including the main opposition UCPN (Maoist) have submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Sushil Koirala calling for correction of the recent Supreme Court verdict relating to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

Submitting the memo to Prime Minister Koirala at the latter's residence in Baluwatar Friday morning, the leaders of the six Maoist parties called for immediate correction of the verdict, terming it as against the norms and spirit of the comprehensive peace accord, interim constitution and the 12-point agreement reached among the parties.

It may be noted that the apex court had on February 26 issued an order annulling some provisions of the TRC and the Commission on Enforced Disappearance, which it said, were against international human rights and humanitarian law standards. Notable of them were various provisions to grant amnesty.

UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, CPN-Maoist Chair Mohan Baidya, CPN (Maoist) Coordinator Matrika Yadav, CPN (Unified) General Secretary Pari Thapa, CPN Maoist General Secretary Netra Bikram Chand and Revolutionary Communist Party General Secretary Mani Thapa had reached the Prime Minister's residence to hand over the memorandum.

The six parties had agreed at a joint meeting on Wednesday to hand over the memo to Prime Minister Koirala.

Talking to reporters, Revolutionary Communist Party General Secretary Thapa said the Prime Minister gave assurances of moving ahead in line with the past agreements.

Likewise, NC spokesperson Dilendra Prasad Badu, who was also present in the meeting, said PM Koirala urged the Maoists not to be alarmed of the apex court verdict, as the government was ready to fully implement the past agreements. RSS
