KATHMANDU, April 19: Rastriya Prajatantra Party-Nepal (RPP-N) has objected to the idea of extending the term of the Constituent Assembly (CA).

It has said there is no other option left except to go for fresh elections for the CA. [break]

"Extending the CA´s term will be unconstitutional as well as a political blunder. It will also be totally against the people´s mandate," RPP-N Chairman Kamal Thapa said.

He criticized top leaders of the UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML for planning to extend the CA´s term. "It was months back, top leaders of the big three parties reached a secret understanding about extending it. They are only staging a drama these days," he said.

He claimed that a large section of the people wouldn´t accept the decision if the big parties forcefully imposed it.

He was of the view that people voted the CA members only for two years. "The representatives themselves can´t extend their own tenure," he argued.

Thapa made it clear that the party wouldn´t create any obstruction in constitution writing process raising the demand of referendum on some crucial agenda.

"We are firm on our stance that some major issues including monarchy, secularism and federalism should be decided only by the referendum. We will keep on raising our voice for this but we will not create any obstruction in constitution writing for this," he said.
