Rally to mark International Disability Day

KATHMANDU, Dec 3: A rally was organised on Monday to mark the 21st International Disability Day.



The Day is being celebrated today across the nation by organizing various programs related to disability.[break]



The rally was started from Basantapur and was converged into assembly after reaching Bhrikutimandap after going through New Road, Bir Hospital and Ratnapark.



Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, Badri Prasad Neupane, also participated in the rally where a large number of people having disability were present.



Similarly, the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal Scouts, students as well as representatives of the organizations working in the sector of women, children and disability were also present in the rally.



The latest census of the country shows that there are some 500,000 disabled in the country.



Addressing the assembly, Minister for Education, Dinanath Sharma said that the government was committed to ensuring rights and fulfilling needs of the disabled.



Minister Sharma said that the government has been making arrangements to provide jobs to disabled as per their study as it was the state´s responsibility.



Similarly, Minister Neupane said that the government was sensitive to guaranteeing the rights of disabled people and added that the government was aware to provide rights and facilities including employment.



Nepal representative of Handicap International, Sarah, drew the attention of the government to build physical infrastructure disabled-friendly and stressed on the need of including the issue of disability in the millennium development goals.



Likewise, Minraj Panthi, on behalf of the disabled said that there was no access of disabled to education, health and employment and pointed out the need of coordination for establishing the rights.
