President´s Republic Day Message

Respected brothers and sisters,

1. I extend my hearty greetings to all Nepali brothers and sisters on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the establishment of the republican system in the country.

2. I extend heartfelt respect and offer condolences for all known and unknown martyrs who laid down their lives in the course of establishing a democratic republic and safeguarding national unity and integrity.

3. Our tireless efforts to realize a six-decade-old dream of transforming Mother Nepal into a country of beauty, peace and prosperity through a democratic constitution promulgated by people´s representatives, is still continuing. We all feel disappointed over the failure to draft a new constitution through the Constituent Assembly even during the term extended through an amendment to the Interim Constitution a year ago. Nevertheless, there is no alternative to concluding the constitution drafting process by creating once again an environment of consensus and mutual trust among the various political actors. We all need to bear this reality in mind. That is also the spirit of the Interim Constitution of Nepal, 2007.

4. At this historic hour, a cautious, forward-looking step informed by the reality of our failure time and again in the past to institutionalize and strengthen our democratic achievements, is in order. The only means to safeguarding the social and economic achievements realized in the face of political instability and addressing the growing aspirations of the people, is a democratic constitution. Therefore, the first priority today is the promulgation of a democratic, republican constitution after concluding the peace process at the earliest. I trust that the political parties in the Constituent Assembly will not fail to utilize this historic opportunity to take the country towards peace, stability and prosperity.

May peace prevail in Nepal. Long live Nepal and Nepalis.

Thank you!
