KATHMANDU, Dec 30: President Dr Ram Baran Yadav on Sunday extended the deadline for the parties to form a national consensus government by another five days.

This is the seventh extension of the deadline.

The president gave the new deadline following a meeting with the leaders of the main political parties - UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) -- held at Shital Niwas on Sunday morning.[break]

The president had summoned the top leaders of three major political parties and UDMF for discussion this morning. The leaders had asked the president to extend the deadline, pledging yet again that they would reach consensus within the given deadline.

“We (political parties) have agreed to resolve differences by January 9,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinator of UDMF Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar.

In the meeting, top leaders of the political parties expressed their commitment to forge consensus in two phases.

According to leaders, in first phase they will forge a package deal and they will carry out the tasks related to amendments to acts and regulations in the second phase.
