NEPALGUNJ, Dec 8: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Saturday said the republican system of governance would come under threat if the political parties fail to hold fresh Constituent Assembly (CA) polls on time.

Though the government has announced to hold the CA polls by mid-May, it is yet to fix a specific date.[break]

PM Bhattarai reminding how repeated failures to hold CA election from 2007BS to 2005 BS had led to the royal takeover by the then king Mahendra said.

"The failure of the political parties had emboldened king Mahendra to stage a coup. If we failed to hold the CA polls yet again, history could repeat itself.”

Stating that the parties should forge consensus by December if polls were to be held on time, he said, "There are many legal hurdles for holding the CA polls. The parties should agree to clear these hurdles."

PM Bhattarai also expressed dissatisfaction over third extension of the deadline for formation of a consensus government by President Dr Ram Baran Yadav.
