KATHMANDU, March 5: With most casinos defying the deadline to submit identity details of their staffs and owners, the Metropolitan Police Range Office (MPRO) has decided to ask the casinos the reason for the delay.

Following the reports that casinos in the capital were dodging the ban on the entry of Nepalis by providing fake ownership and staff identity cards, the Metropolitan Police Range Office had sought identity details of the staff and owners of all casinos operating in Kathmandu through a circulation on February 22.[break]

However, only Casino Sangrila of Lazimpat has submitted the required details within the deadline, an officer at MPRO said. He said that Sangrila has submitted a list of about four hundred people along with the names of the owners.

DSP Chakra Bahadur Singh, Spokesperson at MPRO, said, “Casino Royal and Anna Casino have claimed that they have submitted the details to the local police, but we have not received them yet.”

SSP Rana Bahadur Chanda, chief at MPRO said, “On Wednesday, I will enquire with the casino owners about the reason for ignoring the deadline and take action accordingly. We will not entertain any excuses now,” he said.

After we have the full record of the staffs working in the casinos we can begin effective surveillance to prevent the entry of Nepali citizens, he added.

It is reported that many casinos provide their regular customers with employee identity cards, whereas those flush with money are given cards that identify them as owners. Police officials claim that some highly placed police officers, high-profile political cadres and gangsters supply money illegally to Nepali gamblers at different casinos at a high rate of interest.
