“I am sure that some understanding will emerge from the discussions among the political parties,” Nepal who reached Beltar in Udayapur on Wednesday said.
Speaking at a press meet organized by Press Chautari Nepal, Udayapur, the prime minister laid stress on the need of army integration before writing the constitution. “The new constitution should be issued after the integration of Maoist combatants,” he said, adding, “Permanent peace cannot be achieved without emptying the cantonments.”
According to him, there are two main challenges before the government at present. “The two main challenges before us are: To write the constitution within the stipulated time and, to take the peace process to a logical conclusion,” he said.
“We were successful in releasing 2,397 disqualified Maoist combatants from the cantonments,” he said. But, he said, it was found during the discharge process that many disqualified combatants had already left the cantonments.
The prime minister was also briefed on the security situation in the eastern region. Eastern Regional Administrator Dharanidhar Khatiwada and DIG Bhisma Prasai claimed that the security situation in the eastern region had improved in the last eight months.
The prime minister also unveiled a statute of the late communist leader Pushpalal Shrestha in Beltar. Security was beefed up for the PM´s visit. Maoist cadres waved black flags to the prime minister and shouted slogans demanding his resignation.
