KATHMANDU, April 29: Ruling parties on Thursday urged the UCPN (Maoist) to adhere to constitutional means to make its demands. A meeting of the 14 parties that support the current Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government concluded that the Maoist´s demand for government change cannot be met through street protests.

Talking to mediapersons after the meeting held at Nepali Congress parliamentary party office, Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar said the ruling parties would not bow before Maoists unless a theoretical agreement on various issues related to the peace process and constitution drafting is forged. Gachchhadar, who is also chairman of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (Democratic), said the government will take strict action against the Maoists who are extorting money and infringing on people´s individual liberty.

UML Vice Chair and Defense Minister Bidya Bhandari, who was also present at the meeting, told mediapersons that army could be mobilized if the Maoist protests get violent. She said security agencies, including the army, would be mobilized to maintain law and order. “It all depends on how the Maoist movement will go ahead,” she said.

She said the government will act accordingly if the Maoists tried to capture state through street protests.

All ruling parties advised the government to act tough if the Maoist protests go violent. CPN-ML Chairman CP Mainali said they urged the government to revoke recommendations made by the Constitutional Council on appointments in various constitutional bodies to create environment conducive for talks with the Maoists.

NC Spokesperson Arjun Narsingh KC said the parties also decided to mobilize their sister organizations publicize official stance of the ruling parties on the Maoist protests.
