SLC holds a great significance because it is after this that the crucial step and the journey of shaping one´s academic future begins.[break]
These days it seems that the fresh graduates are opting for subjects that no longer existed few years back in Nepal. Apart from the usual choices of Science, Management and Humanities, students are going for unconventional subjects like Fine Arts, Forestry, Hospitality Management, Fashion Designing, Interior Designing, Hotel Management and Polytechnics to name a few.
Sona Maharjan, a staff at IEC, School of Art and Fashion, says, “We have a lot of fresh SLC graduates coming at IEC to join for fashion designing courses.”
Kalpana Singh, 16, a fresh SLC graduate, says, “As I am really interested in fashion and everything related to designing clothes, I am joining fashion designing courses. I want to study this subject, make it my career and excel in this field. I aspire to become a renowned fashion designer in the future.”
It seems many students nowadays are inclined, fascinated and attracted to various offbeat subjects as myriad opportunities come along with them. An unconventional subject also gives them that edge, provides a strong ground to outshine and helps them to compete in the global market. Moreover, students cannot just limit themselves to an academic degree because they need a wider exposure and knowledge to make a mark in this tough competitive world.
Nima Sherpa, 17, an SLC graduate, says, “I am looking forward to doing Hotel Management since I always wanted to study something that is practical, provides a lot of exposure, and is different from a regular academic course. If I go abroad in the future, it will be a lot of help for me to get jobs easily if I get the training now itself.”
Career planning is a crucial part of student´s life and so students are looking for subjects that cater technical, creative and professional development. Sandra

Shrestha, 16, who just completed her SLC, says, “I am planning to study nursing or interior designing as I am really interested in this field and am hopeful I´ll have a good career in the future.”
Arati Malla, 18, took up nursing right after she completed her SLC and is in her first year now. She says, “I chose to do nursing because I wanted to do something different and serve people. I know it´s really demanding but I work hard and look ahead to contribute as a nurse.”
Strong passion is vital to study such subjects as they demand a lot of time, devotion and commitment from student side.
Devendra Ligal, section officer of Institute of Forestry, Balkhu, says, “A significant number of fresh SLC graduates come to study Forestry here.”
Studying subjects like Forestry not only allows students to excel academically but also shapes them into well-rounded individuals who can compete globally.
Just getting a degree won´t ensure a job but if you have technical and other vocational skills, there is a better chance of making a speedy progress in the job market and setting yourself apart from others. With mushrooming colleges and countless choices, it takes a strong passion to pursue a subject that is not ´standard´ and ´regular´.
However, good news is students these days are looking for and taking up unconventional subjects that can hone their skills in analyzing, exploring and reflecting various issues with a hope that these subjects will provide them with endless opportunities once they have degrees at hand.
