When asked what she had to say about the school of thought that casts off beauty pageants like this one, she says, “I know people say it’s overnight fame and I think it depends on each individual. But I suggest that they come and observe the training sessions and witness the transformation themselves. Everybody works hard from the very beginning and I’m not just talking about training sessions. There’s a whole lot of preparation even before it takes place, whether it’s physical or mental.” [break]
A +2 graduate from Campion College, she is currently preparing for MBBS at NAME Institute. Republica caught up with her for a chat.
Was Miss Teen always your dream?
I wanted to participate last year but I found out about it only after the submission date was closed. I had been inquiring about the contest since the beginning of this year and it was through a radio show that I found out that the forms were open. As soon I heard this, I went to get a form.
Were your parents supportive of this dream and the decision you made about participating in the contest?
My parents weren’t against the idea. Their only concern was whether it would hamper my studies. Other than that, they have been very supportive.
How were the training sessions you went through prior to the final event?
The training was for 17 days and we had many guest speakers like Sadichha Shrestha, Anupama Aura Gurung and Ayusha Karki. We were taught how to present ourselves and I have seen many of my fellow contestants transform from being shy and reserved to confident. The environment was friendly and Kunchhang Moktan Tamang, who trained us, made us feel at home, giving each of us individual attention. Rehearsing with Nirnaya (Shrestha) Sir was the most memorable part of the whole period.
What are your plans now that you’ve won the title crown? What sort of activities are you planning to get involved in?
Along with the runners-up, I’ll be officially involved with Kathmandu Jaycees’ programs in blood donation and sanitation drives. Apart from that, I’ll concentrate on my MBBS exams as there will be opportunities along the way.
As Republica Miss Teen 2012, how do you think you can inspire other teenagers, or those who look up to you?
I’m only 19, so carrying an ideal image of a teenage girl is all I can do for now as a girl who is smart, happy and confident.
