A single bench of judge Kul Prasad Sharma of the District Court of Surkhet on Monday slapped a two and a half year-jail term on Yam Bahadur Pun, 34, a resident of Lekhgaun VDC in Surkhet, for attempting to rape a girl in the neighborhood. [break]Pun was convicted on September 1, 2011. DSP Binod Ghimire at the District Police Office, Surkhet said the police will now arrest Pun and put him behind the bar.
In four of the six rape cases filed at the district court this year, the victims had changed their statements letting the perpetrators off the hook.
Three held for attempted rape
In less than a week after a girl was gang-raped in Damak, the police have arrested three persons for allegedly trying to rape another girl, reported Damak-based Republica correspondent Ramesh Chhetri.
Area Police Office (APO) of Damak arrested Atit Khadka, 19, Ajit Khadka, 17, and Roshan Rai, 17, all residents of Damak municipality-17, on Monday night for allegedly trying to rape a 17-year-old girl in Hangse-Dumse community forest of Jhapa.
According to inspector Hari Khatiwada, the three had run away when passers-by reached there after hearing the girl scream. The police arrested the three acting on a complaint lodged by the victim´s elder sister. However, one of the accused, 23-year-old Rajan Magar, managed to flee.
The police say they are now looking for Magar.
On Tuesday, the police produced the three before the Jhapa District Court.
Only five days ago, the police had arrested three teen-agers for gang-rape of a girl in a tea estate.
