KATHMANDU, May 8: High level government officials have opposed signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Financial Information Unit (FIU) of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) and Taiwan, calling it an act against Nepal´s long standing ´One China Policy´. The policy holds that Taiwan is part of China and not a sovereign country.

Sources said that the government officials stood against the agreement at a meeting of coordination committee formed under Anti-Money Laundering Act held on Sunday. [break]

One official who attended the meeting said that revenue secretary Krishna Hari Baskota informed the gathering about the Chinese objection over MoU signed about a week ago and urged the FIU to explore ways to correct the MoU.

Nepal has already signed FIU with other seven countries. FIU is headed by first class officer of the central bank.

However, senior officials of the central bank informed Republica that the signing of MoU was not a big issue as it has not treated Taiwan as an independent country but as part of China. Since the MoU has explicitly mentioned Republic of China (Taiwan), there is no need of correction.
