Now X-ray report in pen drive

BANEPA, Sept 8: At Dhulikhel Hospital, patients no longer need to carry X-ray reports in envelopes, and therefore they don"t have to worry anymore about the damage folding envelopes could cause to the reports.



With the introduction of digital imaging technology, people will now be able to take reports in CDs, DVDs and even pen drives. [break]



The radiology department of the hospital, for the first time in the country, introduced Digital X-ray (DX) on August 31.



“Though some hospitals in the capital claim to have the technology, the equipment they have are not completely digital,” said Dr Subindra Karki, radiologist of the hospital. “While the equipment in hospitals in Kathmandu need cassettes, the one installed in Dhulikhel Hospital, with the assistance of government of Japan, takes pictures without needing cassettes,” he said.



The picture taken by the equipment in Dhulikhel can be stored in hard drives and can be copied instantly.



At the hospital, a wireless network system has been installed in such a way that the X-ray reports can be viewed by specialists of concerned wards as soon as the picture is taken.



“As soon as the X-ray image is taken, it appears on the computer screen of the relevant doctor. By the time patients reach the relevant ward, the doctor will already have studied the report,” said Dr Karki.



With DX technology, the X-ray report can also be emailed to specialists if they are not available at the hospital, said Dr Rajendra Koju, administrative director of the hospital.



“If consultation of foreign specialist is needed, the report can be emailed,” he said.



The hospital has a working relationship with many specialist hospitals in Europe.



Though Japanese ambassador Tatsuo Mizuno formally inaugurated the device on August 31, about 100 women have already benefited from the service with X-ray pictures of their wombs taken by the machine, Dr Karki said.
