While addressing the mass gathering organised by Nepal Trade Union Congress Independent (NTUC-I) on the occasion of the 121st International Workers´ Day in Lalitpur Saturday, Koirala said workers´ movements have brought great changes in the world. NC was committed to protect democracy, rule of law, press freedom, professional welfare of workers and judicial freedom, he added.[break]
On the occasion, a minute´s silence was observed in memory of the late Girija Prasad Koirala, the founder of the Nepal Trade Union Congress.
Speaking at the same programme, NC vice president Prakash Man Singh stressed on the need to prepare a roadmap to ensure the workers´ rights. The rights of workers can not be guaranteed until the country sees political stability and establishment of democracy, he opined.
May 1 is celebrated as an International Workers´ Day throughout the world to mark the day when workers got a right for eight-hour work, eight- hour rest and eight-hour entertainment some 125 years ago.
In the programme, Labour Minister Mohammed Aftab Alam said the government is committed to ensure the trade union right of workers. Former Minister Omkar Shrestha, Nepal Tarun Dal´s chairman Mahendra Yadav, NTUC-I general secretary Achyut Raj Pandey and NC Lalitpur district president Chandra Maharjan including others stressed that the state should ensure the worker´s rights.
