NHRC not govt's rival: Upadhyay

BIRATNAGAR, April 28: Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Kedar Nath Upadhyay has said the NHRC was not a rival of the government for safeguarding human rights of the people.



Speaking on the ´Use of jurisdiction in human rights protection´ organized jointly by the Judges´ Society Nepal and the National Human Rights Commission, he said the commission was moving ahead in coordination with the government.[break]





He said some government officials had violated human rights in their self-interests and no one should go beyond the law. SC Justice Sushila Karki called on state organs to be active in human rights protection.



Another SC Justice Ram Kumar Prasad Saha said the court has already given justice when the rights of the people were snatched away by state.



Eastern Regional Administrator Janardan Nepal, NHRC Member Ram Nagina Singh and Biratnagar Appellate Court Chief Judge Gopal Prasad Parajuli said the court was always alert in human rights safeguard.



Participating in the two-day seminar are 50 people including district judges of the eastern region and judges of the appellate court. Eastern Regional Commission Chief Koshraj Neupane said the seminar was organized to review the human rights protection. Five working papers will be presented in the seminar.
