KATHMANDU, Dec. 6: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Government to immediately improve the condition of prisons across the country.

In a letter to the Government on Thursday, the NHRC has pointed out that the prisons were in vulnerable situation from the point of view of earthquake, fire and security.

The Commission expressed concern over the excessive pressure of inmates in the prison and lack of adequate arrangement to meet the needs of women inmates and their children, according to NHRC spokesperson Gauri Pradhan.

The NHRC also emphasized on the need to bring appropriate reforms to the prisons and ensure the rights and well-being of the inmates as per the standards set by the Commission´s ´Prison and Custody Monitoring Guidelines, 2065 BS.´
