KATHMANDU, Sept 12: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has showed serious concern over the killing of people in the name of agitations in different districts of Tarai, and lately the murder of assistant sub inspector of armed police by taking him out of the ambulance while being ferried to hospital.

The police action taking the lives of 11 persons in Mahottari, Dhanusha and Saptari districts and murder of the ASI are condemnable incidents which violate human rights and humanitarian law, said a press release issued by NHRC Chairman Anupraj Sharma on Saturday.

Chairman Sharma has strongly demanded the government to probe the incident fairly and bring the culprits to book.

An emergency meeting of the NHRC has urged both the government and agitating parties to exercise restraint and make the agitation peaceful.

Similarly, the NHRC has expressed its belief that the resolution of the problems rests in the political level.

Currently, people's right to movement in a peaceful environment, and carry out their profession and works and expression have been curtailed, the NHRC said, urging all the concerned stakeholders including the government to drive the current scenario towards a correct direction with a sense of responsibility.

The government needs to rethink over its decision to deploy security persons and the agitating sides too need to halt all forms of agitation and strike to hold fruitful dialogue and negotiations, the NHRC underscored.

The government is demanded to provide due compensation and relief to the families of the people and security personnel who lost their lives in course of the agitation and arrange for effective treatment of the injured one. RSS
