KATHMANDU, Feb 24: Nepal Stock Exchange (Nepse) on Wednesday foiled attempts by agitating investors to shut down its main server.

A source at Nepse told myrepublica.com that the Nepse officials rejected calls to down the server despite repeated request from investors. “They picketed our office and shouted slogans for some time. But their plan to shut down the server didn´t materialize,” the source added. [break]

However, investors claimed that they had succeeded in halting transactions at the sole secondary market in the country. “We have brought trading of shares at Nepse to a standstill for the last four days,” Deepak Karki, president of Ordinary Shareholders´ Association told myrepublica.com.

As a part of their week-long protest, the agitating investors had announced to shut the main server of Nepse on Wednesday and Thursday.

Ordinary Investors´ Association, Nepal Investors´ Forum and Nepal Securities Investors´ Association have brought trading at Nepse to a grinding halt for the last four days, demanding the government to soften the policy in margin lending, increase the number of stockbrokers and suspend the process to transfer 19 percent promoters shares to ordinary shares among others.

Meanwhile, Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) has demanded that the government take sincere initiative to resolve the problems seen in the stock market, paying heed to the concerns expressed by share investors.
