KATHMANDU, Sept 7: Nepali basketball squad will leave for Italy on Wednesday to participate in the World Championship of 3X3 Basketball from September 9-11.

Nepal has been practising the newest format of basketball for the past two years. Nepal has been invited to play in the tournament on the basis of its performance. Nepal is in the number one position in south Asia in 3X3 basketball. [break]

National coach Dinesh Nakarmi, who has been providing training to the squad for the last four weeks, said that the players are ready to give their best in the championship. “3X3 basketball is a different type of basketball than the full court game and the players have to show their talent.”

“Nepali players are skillful and have potential to perform well in the championship,” coach Nakarmi informed and added, “The training for the championship is not enough but the skills of the players will help them perform well.”

Nepal youth 3X3 team is in the Group C along with Canada, England, Germany, Japan, Latvia, New Zealand, Romania and Turkey. Nepal will play its first match against Canada. On the same day, Nepal will face England, Latvia, Turkey, Romania and Japan. In the second day of the championship, Nepal will take on Germany and New Zealand.

The Nepali squad consists of experienced as well as new players. Sujan Pun will lead the squad comprising Norbu Tshering Lama, Manish Tamang and Bijay Pujara.

Pun is a member of the Nepali national squad and has been playing basketball from Golden Gate College for last four years. Pun was the member of the senior basketball team which finished third during the Mid-Asia qualifiers held in earlier in June in New Delhi.

Norbu Tshering Lama was the member of the Nepali squad which had participated in the Asian Youth Game in 2009 in Singapore. Lama has been playing basketball for the last six years and was one of the key players of Gyanodaya Bal Batika during his school days.

The other two players Manish Tamang and Bijay Pujara will get their first international duty in Italy. Tamang was the member of National Campus which won the 3X3 National Basketball recently.

He has been playing basketball for the past six years from Unique School as well as National College. Pujara, who has been involved with basketball for six years, had earlier played for Navajyoti School and is currently with VS Niketan.

Pun opined that the players have to work hard to register a victory in this type of game because it is of a new format. “This is a half-court game and will be more physical. We had less training time for the championship but the squad members are confident ahead of the game,” said the captain.
