Nepal wins four WB projects<br/>Chicken price up to Rs 242 per kg

KATHMANDU, Aug 5: Nepal has won four projects worth US$40,000 each under the World Bank Grant Competition Awards, according to a World Bank (WB) press statement issued on Wednesday. [break]



The winners will have to use the amounts on projects aimed at improving nutrition in Nepal. These projects will have to be implemented within the next 18 months.



The competition drew nearly 1,000 applications from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, the Maldives, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The applications were narrowed down to 60 finalists through vigorous assessment process by international development experts.



India was the most represented country among winners, with nine out of the 21 winning proposals. Bangladesh and Nepal tied in second place with four winners each. Pakistan followed with two winners. Sri Lanka and Afghanistan had one winning proposal each.



Amongst the innovative ideas recognized was a proposal from Vijaya Development Resource Center to improve young children´s feeding practices through micronutrient supplements. Equal Access Nepal was recognized for its proposal to enhance birth weight and survival of infants, and MaxPro Private Limited won for its idea to develop a community-based distribution network for iodized salt. Another winning proposal from Nepal was from the Helen Keller International Inc, to reduce malnutrition in children below two years of age.





Chicken price up to Rs 242 per kg



KATHMANDU, Aug 5: Citing rising cost of inputs and supply deficit in recent weeks amid dipping production, poultry entrepreneurs have raised the price of chicken to Rs 242 kg in the capital. This is the second time in a week that the poultry entrepreneurs have raised the price.



A joint meeting of poultry farmers, feed producers and chicken sellers held on Wednesday decided to increase the price, said Janga Bahadur BC, general secretary of National Chicken Sellers Association.



On Saturday, the poultry entrepreneurs had raised the price of live chicken and dressed chicken by Rs 5 and Rs 7 per kg to Rs 165 per kg and Rs 235 per kg respectively.



With this increment, the retail price of live chicken and dressed chicken has reached Rs 170 per kg and Rs 242 per kg respectively.



Tika Ram Pokharel, president of Nepal Poultry Entrepreneurs Forum, an umbrella organization of poultry producers, said supplies of chicken from Chitwan, the key producer district, has dropped by about 25 percent.



On normal days, Chitwan supplies about 180 tons of chicken to the capital.
