All Koshi Barrage gates to open if flood threat escalates

KATHMANDU, July 19: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged the public to remain alert after forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in various parts of the country, warning of increased risks of floods, landslides and inundation. In response, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has stepped up its preparedness.

The acting executive chief of the authority, Pradip Kumar Koirala, said all gates of the Koshi Barrage will be opened gradually today if rising river flows create a flood risk.


Flood expert Binod Parajuli of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said river discharge is being monitored continuously and that 21 districts face a moderate flood risk.


The authority has coordinated with security agencies to prepare for possible rescue and response operations. It has also urged local governments, security agencies and other concerned bodies to remain on high alert and take special precautions in riverbank areas and locations vulnerable to landslides.


The public has also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from high-risk areas.
