According to foreign secretary Madan Bhattarai, the governments of India and Nepal formally exchanged confirmation letters regarding the deal on March 23. Bhattarai also informed that India will supply MRPs within 10 weeks.
A cabinet meeting on March 19 had given nod to Foreign Ministry to negotiate with the Indian government for printing the passports in such a way that the government would be able to issue the MRPs by April 1. Nepal, as a member of the ICAO, a UN agency, is required to introduce MRPs by April 1.
Non-machine readable passports can be issued only till March 31 and these will be acceptable only till November 24, 2015.
