NC and CPN-UML leaders said they have realized the need for “broader unity” between the parties to put pressure on the Maoists to be honest to the agreements relating to the peace process and constitution drafting. [break]
“There is a need for broader unity and understanding between the parties, especially at this critical juncture,” CPN-UML leader Bhim Rawal said, “We have been holding discussions to forge an understanding on the system of governance and other issues, hoping that such a move would yield a solution to the present stalemate.”
NC and CPN-UML leaders have felt the urgency for broader alliance and common understanding following the suggestion from 15 small parties. The two main opposition parties held extensive meetings with the small parties on Monday and Tuesday.
NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Paudel, emerging from the meeting on Tuesday, informed that NC and CPN-UML will come up with common position on the system of governance in the next meeting. “The talk between NC and CPN-UML is likely to be held on Saturday,” he stated.
The UCPN (Maoist) has been advocating for a popularly elected president while the NC says that it will not compromise on parliamentary system. But CPN-UML has advocated for directly elected prime minister.
Chairman of CPN-UML Jhalanath Khanal, emerging from the meeting, said the leaders at the meeting stressed on the need for a system of governance compatible to Nepal´s geopolitical situation.
“The leaders were of the view that we should adopt a system that would not invite instability and dictatorship in the country,” said Khanal.
“We the leaders of small parties suggested to NC and CPN-UML to come up with a common stance on the issue of system of governance keeping in mind the report of the taskforce headed by lawmaker Laxmanlal Karna,” Co-chairman of Rastriya Janashakti Party Prakash Chandra Lohani told media persons.
