The participants of the regional gathering organized by the NC Central Policy and Orientation Academy were divided into four groups to make suggestions on the number of federal states. [break]The groups concluded that Nepal cannot afford to have more than seven states and that it would be a blunder to carve out federal states on the basis of ethnicity.
Earlier, NC central committee member and lawmaker Gagan Thapa had presented a paper on the state restructuring at the meeting.
The four different groups led by former Nepal Student Union President Guru Raj Ghimire, Amar Regmi of Siraha, Uddhav Thapa of Jhala and CWC member Padma Narayan Chaudhary also suggested north-south division of states.
A representative from Dhankuta Gopal Prasad Adhikari, who was in the group led by Thapa, said he suggested only six states keeping in view the economic viability and unique identity of the geographical areas concerned. “Suggestions have been made to make Kathmandu Valley one state,” he said.
The participants also focused the need for expediting development activities in the Tarai.
They argued that NC should take initiatives for the construction of railway line and modernization of agriculture. They also suggested the party leadership to make inventory of the property seized by the Maoist during the conflict and press the Maoists to return them.
