KATHMANDU, April 29: Senior leaders of the Nepali Congress are divided over whether to bring a no trust motion against Prime Minster Baburam Bhattarai’s government.

The Baidya faction in the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoists) has reached out to the NC and UML leaderships with an assurance that it will cast vote against the Bhattarai government should the NC and UML sponsor no trust motion.[break]

NC parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel and leader Ram Sharan Mahat, among others, have argued that is possible to dislodge the present government with help of Baidya group so the party should take initiative in that direction.

However, party general secretary Krishna Sitaula and leder Minendra Rijal, among others, don’t believe in such a possibility and have argued that initiating a no trust motion against Bhattarai government will only discredit the party in the eye of the public as the country has entered a crunch time in constitution writing.

Sitaula has, instead argued that the right course to change the government is through dialogue and negotiations with Maoist party. “Sitaula and come other leaders believe that since the Maoists have agreed in principle to form a national consensus government led by NC after the promulgation of the constitution, they can be persuaded to form such a government after the completion of negotiations on constitution and before its promulgation,” said an NC leader.

But Paudel and other leaders have pointed at the risk attached to this approach.

“What if Bhattarai doesn’t resign before the promulgation of the constitution once we join the government,” asked a skeptic NC leader.

Sitaula and others, in the meantime, have argued that there is even more risk in trying to remove Bhattarai government through no trust motion with the help of Baidya camp. NC President Sushil Koirala, meanwhile, remains confused over choosing between these two courses.

“Koirala has given a green signal to Sitaula to initiate dialogue with Dahal and Bhattarai to see if his preferred course is viable but isn’t fully convinced about it and remains confused about the future course of the Nepali Congress,” said an NC leader.
