KATHMANDU, March 31: The National Medicine Laboratory has received international ISO accreditation, obtaining the ISO 17025:2017 certificate.
The accreditation comes 60 years after its establishment, making the country’s only government laboratory dedicated to drug testing officially ISO-certified.

“The laboratory received the ISO certificate after three years of continuous effort by the entire team. We made significant improvements in management and quality standards to achieve this certification,” Bhattarai said.
The laboratory is responsible for testing and analyzing medicines produced in Nepal and those imported from abroad, as well as ensuring quality control and validation of testing methods. It also examines samples provided by the Department of Drug Administration, private pharmaceutical industries, and other institutions.
In addition, the laboratory evaluates the quality of private laboratories, conducts regulatory audits, verifies analytical methods, certifies vaccines received from government agencies, and inspects good laboratory practices.
Established under Section 6 of the Drugs Act, 2035, the laboratory serves as the government’s primary institution for scientific research, testing, and analysis of medicines in Nepal.
