KATHMANDU, Sept 7: With temperature cooling off gradually over time, monsoon in Nepal has finally began retreating. Gradually weakening rainfall being witnessed across the country including the withdrawal of monsoon clouds from Rajasthan of India are the two major indicators of monsoon withdrawing from Nepal.

According to Barun Paudel, meteorologist at Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD), monsoon is turning passive and so there is least probability of heavy rainfall."Since September, rainfall across the country has decreased markedly. Heavy rainfall especially that lasts for hours are no longer observed. These are the climatic condition that show monsoon is turning ineffective. It tells us monsoon is finally withdrawing," said Poudel, meteorologist.

In the last 24 hours, least rainfall has been recorded in almost 15 weather stations across the country. Besides Taplejung with 25mm of rainfall and 3mm in Dhankuta, rest of the weather stations have been reported no rainfall.

Dadeldhura, Dipayal, Dhangadhi, Birendranagar, Nepalgunj, Jumla, Dang, Pokhara, Bhairahawa, Simara, Kathmandu, Okhaldhunga and Biratnagar have not experienced rainfall for nearly 24 hours.

"Not only yesterday [Saturday], but rainfall across the country has been recorded weak for days now. Among others, the western region remains badly hit," said Poudel.

Moreover, Indian Meteorological Division (IMD) has already reported monsoon withdrawal from Rajesthan of India. It is this Southwesterly path from where monsoon clouds enter Nepal.

"When monsoon over Rajesthan begins to retreat, it is the time when we experts say monsoon has begun withdrawing from here as well. We believe, monsoon will completely withdraw from the third week of September," said Poudel.

Normally, DHM considers September 23 as normal date for monsoon withdrawal.

"We have been experiencing delayed monsoon withdrawal for almost three years now. Last year, monsoon withdrawal was observed on October 7. Let us see how monsoon reacts this year," said Poudel.
