The party, issuing a press release, demanded the government to fix the price of sugarcane as demanded by the farmers, free treatment and compensation to all those injured during the police action.[break]
The party added that Durga Bahadur Chauhan and Samir Ghimire were seriously injured in the incident. Eight others were also injured, it added.
Farmers clash with police
Sugarcane farmers clashed with police in Sarlahi after the security force tried to end the disruption on the East-West Highway on Sunday.
Police fired on air and used tear-gas shells to disperse thousands of farmers demanding increase in the price of sugarcane.[break]
The farmers have declared earlier that they would disrupt the Highway for three hours beginning 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Farmers to disrupt Highway completely from Jan 4
Meanwhile, sugarcane farmers of Nawalparasi have also announced to disrupt the East-West Highway for an indefinite period from January 4 citing inappropriate price assessment of sugarcane.
The announcement Highway disruption came when the government turned deaf ear though they had been on agitation for the past two weeks demanding appropriate price of sugarcane.
The sugar mills in Nawalparasi have determined Rs. 338 for per quintal of sugarcane while farmers have demanded it to be Rs. 570.
They are resorted to disrupt highway since the demands they have been putting forward have not been addressed, said Secretary of Sugarcane Farmers´ Committee, Prem Chandra Gupta.
