Ramdhari Mahara, 50, a resident of Santapur VDC-3 who has been at large after his daughter-in-law Sanju Devi, 25, killed herself a week ago, was arrested by police, Thursday evening. [break]SP Govinda Ram Pariyar, chief of Area Police Office Chandranigahapur in Rautahat, said Mahara had been hiding near his own house after Sanju Devi´s suicide.
Police nabbed Mahara after neighbors disclosed that Sanju Devi committed suicide as she could not endure the torture meted out to her by her father-in-law and other members of the family.
According to police, Sanju Devi was severely thrashed by Mahara and others on April 25 when her husband Sikendra Ram was not at home.
Inspector Nanda Lal Sah said Mahara admitted that he and other members of his family tortured Sanju Devi to force her to bring a dowry.
According to Ram Bilash Mahara, Sanju Devi´s father, his daughter´s dead body had been left abandoned at her own house. "After my daughter´s suicide, no one from her husband´s family bothered to perform her last rites," he said. "I myself performed her last rites."
He now hopes that others involved in his daughter´s death will also be arrested soon.
