Madhesi protesters removed from Birgunj-Raxaul border check-point (with photos)

KATHMANDU, Nov 2: The Birgunj-Raxaul border check point, which was remained closed for more than one month due to sit-in by the cadres of United Democtatic Madhesi Front, has been reopened from Monday morning.

A group of Madhesi protesters had been organizing a sit-in 24 hours in a day at the Miteri Bridge of the border of the check-point.

The border check point reopened after the Nepal police used force to remove the Madhesi protestors from Miteri Bridge at around 4.30 am this morning.

According to Pramod Gupta, central member of Federal Socialist Forum Nepal, a total of 12 protestors have been injured in the incident.

With the removal of the agitators from the check-point, the stranded Indian cargo vehicles have entered Raxaul, India.

The drivers of the stranded Indian cargo vehicles were holding a sit–in in front of Birgunj-based Indian consulate office demanding the opening of the entry-point for several days.

According to Narayan Khadka, Narayani Zonal Police Chief, a total of 80 stranded Indian cargo trucks have already entered India and the customs office has also come under the control of police.


The District Administration Office Parsa said that the task of sending Indian vehicles stranded at Birgunj for the past couple of months has started with removal of  obstruction at the border.

In the first phase the Indian vehicles stranded at Nepal's land will be sent to India and secondly efforts will be made to bring in goods-laden vehicles to Nepal after consultation with Indian side possibly today.


Border check-point opening sparks protests

Meanwhile, the situation remained tense at Birgunj city following the police crackdown to open the obstructed checkpoint. 


The demonstrators have been staging protest burning tires in different places against the police crackdown at border. Police had destroyed the tent fixed by the protestors at Miteripul and also seized other materials.

Parsa Chief District Officer Keshab Raj Ghimire informed that the police held four persons for creating hurdles in police bid to open the point.

The arrested are yet to be identified, he said, adding that they have been kept at the Parsa District Police Office for necessary investigation.
