The locals have accused 12 Maoist cadres of looting paddy grown in over 11 bighas of land belonging to four local farmers in Chuha and Hasuliya VDCs of Kailali district on Wednesday night and Thursday afternoon.
Hundreds of farmers from Baliya, Pratpur, Chuha, Dododhara and Kota Tulsipur VDC participated in the protest. They have asked the government to take action against the guilty and provide compensation to the victims.
The farmers claimed that the Maoist combatants, who are supposed to remain inside UN-monitored cantonments, were among those involved in the incident.
On the other hand, the Maoists have claimed that the looted paddy was distributed to freed kamaiyas (bonded laborers), landless squatters and flood-hit people.
About 200 Maoists had loaded the paddy onto tractor trailers and took it away from fields belonging to Shankarman Bohara, Khem Raj Pandey, Prem Dhungana and Khadak Bir Chaudhary. The Maoists had locked up the farmers inside their own houses while loading the paddy onto the tractors.
