KATHMANDU, Nov 26: Entrepreneurs and locals of Lamjung are developing new trekking trails in the district to retain their hold on trekker traffic to other districts via Lamjung.

According to a press statement by Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN), the stakeholders at an interaction in Lamjung have stated that they were exploring new trekking trails in the district so that it will be an alternative to the popular Annapurna Circuit Trek which is losing its charm with the advent of motorable roads. Speaking at the interaction, President of Lamjung Chambers of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) Bhesh Bahadur Paudel said, “Lamjung holds great potential for tourism development but we have failed to exploit the potential to the fullest.” He said they were exploring possibilities for tourism development and were developing new trekking trails in the district.

TAAN General Secretary Mohan Lamsal said they were ready to provide technical and financial support in exploration of new trails in the district. “We have already been exploring new trekking trails for the Great Himalayan Trial and Lamjung has huge potential for tourism products like mountain-bike tours and jeep tours,” he added.

TAAN President Mahendra Singh Thapa asked the locals to promote camping trek and home stay trek.

At the interaction, locals also demanded officials of Annpurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) to open a permit counter in the district to facilitate foreign tourists.

“ACAP should open a counter in Lamjung to help tourist as it is inconvenient to go to Kathmandu and Pokhara for permits,” Pramod Kumar Shrestha former president of LCCI said.

The locals also requested officials of TAAN to develop its TIMS Counter at Besishahar as a Tourist Information Center.
