The office, which is responsible for ensuring quality of food, said that it has made advanced water testing laboratories a prerequisite for all water processing companies. She hopes that presence of advance laboratory at every company would help maintain the quality of drinking water available in the market.
The trend processing companies renewing their licenses has decreased after the office made the laboratory facility mandatory, the DFTQC said. "Many companies haven´t come forward to renew their licenses after we made the laboratory mandatory," Pramod Koirala, spokesperson of DFTQC, said.
He said that the office will take legal action against companies that disregard the directives. The office said that companies can be slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 or six months jail to the operators who defy the government order.
DG lama said that the office is working to update the existing regulation to increase the penalty for offending companies. She said that the office will strictly enforce new regulation, which would compel the companies to be more responsible. The office is preparing to conduct extensive study of the processed water selling in the market. "It is necessary to act immediately as the processed water samples collected by food inspectors of DFTQC were found to be troubling," she added.
The DFTQC said that presence of coliform and chemicals like iron and ammonia were at hazardous level in most samples.
The DFTQC examines food items and water quality its own advance laboratory.
