Organizing a press meet in the capital, probe committee said the prison administration was unaware about the altercation between two prisoners -- deceased Nepali and Hari Sapkota of Tanahu - who were kept in the same cell. [break]
According to the report, Sapkota had stabbed Nepali to death after a heated exchange. The other prisoners who were in the same cell didn´t intervene while and there were no security personnel near the cell when the incident took place, the report said.
Sapkota, who is in jail for the murder of his own mother six years ago and is on medication for mental illness. “If the prison authority or security personnel had stopped us from fighting, Nepali would not have been killed,” admitted Sapkota.
The probe committee comprising legal experts, Dalit rights activists and representatives of National Dalit Commission, had visited the prison following the incident. Coordinator of the probe committee Binod Pahadi accused Kavre CDO, district police chief Gita Upreti, jailor Matrika Dahal of not responding on time.
Dalit rights activists have warned of protests if the government does not take action against the guilty.
Murali Nepali, the father of deceased said, “I will not receive the dead body until the government investigates into the case and punishes the guilty.”
Kumar Nepali, who was serving his term in Rasuwa jail, had been transferred to Dhulikhel jail as he was suffering from mental illness. Kumar´s body has been kept at TUTH, Maharajgunj for post-mortem.
