Health ministry concerned over kidney patient demands

KATHMANDU, Aug. 11: The Ministry of Health and Population has said its serious attention was drawn to the relay hunger strike staged at local Ratna Park since August 9 by Nepal Kidney Society.



The Society has been staging a relay hunger strike calling for providing free and affordable treatment of renal diseases and for accessible kidney transplantation facilities.[break]



The Ministry stated in a press release today that in case of people suffering from kidney diseases, treatment was available to economically poor citizens at Rs 50,000 at nine government-run, private and NGO-run hospitals and health institutions while some health institutions were providing free treatment services to people suffering from Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and people who have tested HIV positive and also to people above 75 years in age and suffering from kidney diseases.



It stated that from the current fiscal year 2012/013, the Organm Transplant Centre, Bhaktapur has started providing its services and there is a plan to expand this service to other government, private and NGO-run health institutions.



The Ministry also stated that it was positive on the memorandum presented to it as well as other bodies and to the demands therein. The Ministry will make maximum efforts for additional budget for making arrangements for providing affordable and quality treatment services to the kidney patients.



The Ministry of Health and Population has called the protesters to call off their relay hunger strike and come for talks.
