KATHMANDU, March 2: Association of Pharmaceutical Producers of Nepal (APPON) has claimed that Nepal has become self-independent in 80 percent of essential medicines.

At a press meet organized on Tuesday to inform about upcoming Nepal Pharma Expo 2010, the association demanded the government to strictly control import of drugs that are manufactured in Nepal.

Umesh Lal Shrestha, president of APPON, demanded the government to follow the policy adopted by Bangladesh to strengthen local pharmaceutical industry.

According to the association, 16 of the 47 pharmaceutical companies in Nepal have been awarded World Health Organizations´ standard on good manufacturing practice (WHO GMP).

Shrestha said all the companies would get WHO GMP certification within two years. He also said 40 percent of total medicine demands in the country have been met by Nepali producers.

The two-day Pharma Expo 2010 will be organized in Bhrikuti Mandap, Kathmandu on March 5 and 6. According to the organizers, the expo will have 88 stalls of pharmaceutical companies, equipment manufacturers, laboratory, raw material manufacturers and packaging material manufacturers among others.

“The visitors can get the opportunity to know about drug manufacturing process and post-production test of the drugs,” Shrestha said. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal is scheduled to inaugurate the expo.
