The cable used to pull the ferry along malfunctioned on Wednesday morning. Following the mishap, trucks and public transport vehicles have been stranded on both sides of the river. [break]
Surkhet Chief District Officer Budhi Prasad Sapkota said the cable broke down when the ferry was being taken toward an integrated mobile camp at the eastern part of the river. “The ferry service had only recently resumed. The ferry cable broke but no one was hurt as a vehicle that was scheduled to be ferried was still on the river bank,” said CDO Sapkota.
After the mishap, vehicles coming from Jajarkot were stuck at Rakam and Birendranagar while vehicles arriving from Kathmandu have been held up at Salleri Bazar.
“Now, more than 100 vehicles and thousands of passengers will be affected each day,” he said.
The Chinchu-Jajarkot road project office has directed that the broken cable be replaced with a new one.
