Speaking at an interaction organized by Reporters´ Club-Nepal in the capital, Dr Mahat said there is no possibility of a Maoist-led government unless the former rebel party takes concrete steps on army integration and rehabilitation and returns properties seized during the conflict.[break]
“There is no possibility of a Maoist-led government under the present circumstances,” he said.
“The peace process has lost momentum, while the Maoists are not ready to hand over their weapons to the state before August 31. Given this situation, there is no point in supporting the Maoists to form a government,” he clarified.
Dr Mahat, however, said that NC would not object to formation of a Maoist-led government if the latter severs its links with arms and combatants and joins peaceful politics.
Dr Mahat, who is also a member of Special Committee, said that there has not been any progress in the integration and rehabilitation of the combatants as the Maoists are showing unwillingness to take the peace process to a logical conclusion. Maoist must demonstrate flexibility by adhering to the past agreements, he said.
Mahat claimed that the process of integration and rehabilitation has been stalled as the Maoists have been insisting that the combatants be integrated into the security agencies with their former identities intact. He said the peace process must be concluded so that the new constitution can be promulgated on time.
