This has become a regular ritual for students as there is no drinking water facility in the village. [break]
It is not that villagers residing in Goseda village of Dipayal-Silgadhi municipality have done nothing to ensure drinking water supply to the village. However, their repeated pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
The school´s principal Lok Bahadur Shahu said parents ask their wards to carry water back home as they are busy tending to cattle and collecting fodder. However, water from the stream has infected children with worms, said Manuwa Singh Saud, a local guardian.
“It takes about an hour to fetch water from the stream. If we send another family member to fetch water, he will not be able to do any other work. That´s why we send out kids to school with water containers,” he added.
“My father looks after cattle. Mother collects fodder,” said Pooja Damai, a fifth grader. “I take water home while returning from school, and then make another trip to fetch water,” she added.
Nar Bahadur Saud, a local, said political leaders visit the village during election campaigns and promise drinking water supply. But the words are seldom translated into action.
Scarcity of water also means poor toilet practices, said school principal Shahu.
Locals added that it was difficult for grown-ups in the village to get brides because of water scarcity.
