KATHMANDU, Sep 7: The Department of Commerce (DoC) that has stepped up market inspection in recent weeks on Wednesday took action against three stores in Balaju that were found selling outdated and substandard products.

A joint inspection team of DoC, District Administration Office (DAO), consumer´s organization and Metropolitan Police Range, Hanumandhoka destroyed 11 packs of Rahul Ghee (each weighing half kg) and 2 liter jar of Dhara oil from Samjhana Store; 25 packs of BMC chat masala from DB Store and a 30 kg-sack of Osho Masala Udhyog in Balaju. All the products were not fit for consumption.

“So much so, we also found some of the shopkeepers operating without registering their stores,” said Eka Dev Adhikari, market inspector of DoC.

While Samjhana Store and DB Store were found selling outdated and substandard products, Osho Masala Udhyog was found manufacturing spices in large volume without even bothering to register the industry. Moreover, the inspection team also found the Osho Masala Udhyog of recycling expired products and selling them without any label on them.

The department also cautioned Balaju-based Alliance Gas and Water Suppliers after it was found selling bottled water without any label and seal.

“We have destroyed the substandard products and warned the sellers of stringent action if they are found flouting Consumers Rights Protection Act (CRPA) in the future,” said Adhikari.

The department had sealed Corner Taja Gudpak Bhandar and Shree Krishna Gudpak Bhandar -- two most popular gudpak sellers in the city -- on Monday after they were found using rotten, outdated and substandard raw materials apart from recycling the expired gudpak. The department has presently released the wrongdoers on date.

“We will take actions against them after the Department of Food Technology and Quality Control (DFTQC) submits us the examination report of their products,” said Adhikari.

Meanwhile, the Finance and Labor Relations Committee (FLRC) of Parliament on Wednesday took stock of market inspection works carried out by the DoC and other market regulators.

While lauding the initiatives of the DoC, the committee directed the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of General Administration to arrange security force, provide necessary logistics support and additional manpower to the market inspection teams to enable them carry out their duties more effectively.

The committee also issued the directive after the authorities stated that lack of adequate manpower and security was deterring market inspection activities.

“We have also asked the government to make arrangements whereby legal actions against the wrongdoers could be initiated instantly,” said Shanta Basnet, coordinator of a subcommittee of FLRC.

The subcommittee has also instructed the DoC to give continuity to its inspection drive.
