DHARAN, Feb 28: Cancer-ridden Sarita Dewan, 52, of Barghachi, Dharan-8 has survived several cancer treatments in the last six years, and she strongly believes that there is more to life still. After a series of painful chemotherapies, her body has weakened to the bones but her will to live is firmer than ever.

Like with every other cancer patient, money has become a major factor. [break]

Had it only been once or twice, things would have been normal but in Dewan´s case the cancer relapsed four times. Doctors have now found that the cancer has spread to the intestines and reached the uterus.

"I have faith in the doctors. The love and care of my family has helped me battle the disease before and we will have victory this time also," said Dewan.

Dewan, along with her extended family, runs an ordinary restaurant in Dharan for their living.

"It was in 2007 that I was first diagnosed with uterine cancer," said Dewan, taking to Republica inside her rented flat in Bargachi. "After being referred to Bharatpur Cancer Hospital, I went through surgery, and as I recall it, I was given six chemotherapies in total," she added.

The old lower abdominal pain receded for two years after the operation. But to her horror, the malady started to affect the breasts. BP Memorial Hospital in Dharan conformed her suspicion of breast cancer. "That second time also, I was hospitalized for surgery and received 29 rounds of radiotherapy," she said.

It was when her health had started to show signs of improvement as her metabolism kept strengthening for three straight years that she started to develop a lump in the thigh area. A check-up revealed that the old cancer had returned in another form. Dewan went through surgery and chemotherapy again.

"After the third treatment, doctors kept me under close observation and it was only a few months later that they informed me my previous uterus infection haf surfaced again, and this time it had also spread to the intestines," said Dewan. "And my body won´t take any more of chemotherapy," added Dewan.

According to the doctors, the infected part of the intestine and urinary tract need be replaced with artificial tracts.

But in spite of all her malady, Dewan still lives with hope. "This time I had given up but the doctors and my near and dear ones inspired me to fight for life one more time," said Dewan.

She has spent Rs 1,000,000 in bank loans and other cash on all her treatment so far and the doctors have recommended that she bring Rs 100,000 more for the latest treatmemt. "All their savings have been spend on her treatment and we´re trying our best to collect financial support," said a neighbor who has been helping her throughout her treatment.
