Demands for Tamuwan state based on identity

POKHARA, May 1: A three-day conference of Tamuwan Indigenous Nationalities Committee concluded on Tuesday demanding a Tamuwan state on a basis of ethnic identity and warned of protests if the government failed to address their demand.



It issued a 12-point declaration that demanded among others, guarantees of autonomous rights of indigenous nationalities in new constitution.[break]



The meeting also formed a Tamuwan Unified Struggle Committee to pressure the government and major political parties to address their demands.



"If the government doesn´t give us a new constitution that addresses our demand, we will launch a movements that will be stronger than the mass movement of 2006," said Kumbha Raj Gurung, acting president of the newly formed struggle committee.
